Using the DynWiFi network requires that you take a few upfront precautions to ensure the safety of your computer and data. These precautions apply to any public wireless network, no matter how secure it claims to be.
The first step is to ensure that your computer and all the applications you use are fully patched and up-to-date. Most modern operating systems and applications can perform these checks for you, and automatically too.
Then, ensure that your computer is running a firewall. Again, many operating systems feature built-in firewalls but there are many great commercial solutions available should it not be the case.
Finally, ensure that everything you do is protected by encryption. For most users, that means loading web pages and checking emails over SSL, wrapping passwords and data in an encrypted tunnel. If you are unsure about the way to set this up, ask your tech guy or your vendor.
No security solution is 100% effective in all cases but this should cover most bases. And of course, never surf and drive or tempt wannabe pickpockets with valuable equipment on the streets.
Nobody and everybody. Nobody because DynWiFi is an entirely free, philanthropic initiative from Dynamic Network Services Incorporated. We do not benefit commercially from running the service: on the contrary, we are donating most of the resources required for the network to run and to keep running, along with other awesome volunteers.
Of course, one could argue that everybody makes money out of DynWiFi because the network encourages business in the downtown area. Free Internet access enables everybody to communicate freely. This means a stronger local economy and an all-around cooler city to live in.
It all boils down to our love of sandwiches and our commitment to being the best networkers the world has ever seen. A large part of our business is to run one of the world's most reliable networks for our clients worldwide. This means we need to be able to connect to the Internet from anywhere, at all times.
WiFi is the best way to implement fast, reliable Internet access that works everywhere, even where delicious sandwiches are served. That's how the idea for DynWiFi was born.
Oh, and there is also that part about loving our city and wanting to give back to the community that has supported and nurtured us since our beginnings as a commercial operation… but shhh, that's our secret.
